Doe maar stiekem
Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog was
carnaval vieren verboden. Roosendaal was
zwaar gebombardeerd en zag er verdrietig
uit. Het was koud en er lag sneeuw. Mensen
voelden zich somber, maar wilden toch
samen lachen en plezier maken. Er zat niets
anders op: ze gingen stiekem carnaval
vieren! Want een Brabander kan toch niet
zonder carnaval!?
Secretly beneath streamers and serpentines
During World War II under German occupation, there was no room for celebration. All cities
in Limburg and Brabant were forced to cancel Carnival – including Roosendaal. On the wintry
day of January 22, 1941, six months after the devastating bombing, Mayor Prinsen announced
the decree over the city’s loudspeakers. It marks a definitive ban on any form of costume,
disguise, parade, or festivity. In this bleak reality, the longing for warmth and comfort only
grew. For connection and joy, even if only for a moment. After all, how could a Brabander
survive such times without his Carnival?
