Wist je dat mensen in Tilburg vroeger in een kruik
plasten? Daarom kregen ze de bijnaam kruikenzeikers!
Ze leverden hun kruik in bij de wolfabriek, waar de
urine werd gebruikt om wol te verven.
Dat was een stinkklus, dus vandaar de wasknijpers!
Zie je dat grote blauwe schaap? Dat staat voor de wol
en de carnavalssjaal van Tilburg.De wol begint blauw,
maar verandert in de bekende groene en oranje
kleuren van carnaval.
Jarpissers dyed in wool
Tilburg was once known as a wool city. Wool factories needed urine to wash, rinse, and dye the
wool, so locals collected their urine in jars and brought it to the factory. That’s how Tilburg got
its proud nickname: the ‘Jarpissers’, still celebrated today during Carnival. Look at the big blue
sheep – a nod to the wool industry.
Why blue? It’s the first colour that appears when dyeing wool. See how it fades in the green
and orange Carnival scarf of Tilburg. And did you know the famous Tilburg drink, Schrobbelèr,
is named after a textile worker? Cheers to the jar!
