Hoe de Fransen carnaval
terugbrachten
Wist je dat we carnaval ook een beetje aan de
Fransen te danken hebben? Rond 1800 kwamen
zij naar Nederland. Dat was best spannend, maar
ze brachten ook iets goeds mee: mensen mochten
weer carnaval vieren! En sommige dingen doen nog
steeds denken aan het leger van toen. Een prins
met een steek op, net als een generaal. Marsmuziek
met trommels en blazers. Wat begon als een
bezetting, werd het begin van een vrolijk feest. Vive
le carnaval! (Dat is Frans voor: Leve het carnaval!)
An occupation became a celebration
Before 1794, during Protestant rule, Carnival – a lively Catholic festival before Lent – was
banned. Then, French Catholic soldiers took over the Southern Netherlands. They brought
new ideas: Equality, Freedom, and Brotherhood. Suddenly, people could openly celebrate their
Catholic faith and with it, Carnival returned. Many carnival customs, like the music, costumes,
and especially the famous ‘steek’ (a special hat), playfully mocked the French soldiers’
uniforms and generals’ hats. Carnival became a way to laugh at the occupation and celebrate
freedom. Vriendenkring Van Gaal tells how, during this time of change, Carnival was brought
back and how its traditions, full of humor and pride, still live on today. Vive le carnaval!
