Carnavalsdinsdag wordt ook wel ‘Vette Dinsdag’
genoemd. In het Frans vertaald: ‘Mardi gras’. Op
deze dag gaan christenen namelijk nog één dag
helemaal uit hun dak en daarbij eten ze alle laatste
restjes aan vet eten op. Want de dag erna, op
Aswoensdag, begint de vastenperiode. In deze
periode leven zij juist heel eenvoudig en eten ze
minder dan normaal. Ze denken in deze periode veel
na over het leven en hun geloof. Op Aswoensdag
krijgen ze van de pastoor als symbool een kruisje
van as op hun voorhoofd.
Excess becomes contemplation
Greasy Tuesday – Mardi Gras in French, Pancake Tuesday in English – is the final day of Carnival.
It’s one last day to party and go all out, and one last chance to indulge in every rich, fatty treat
before the fasting season of Lent begins. That’s where the Dutch name ‘Vette Dinsdag’ comes
from! What a contrast with the day after: Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, marked by fasting,
sobriety, and sorrow. A period of simplicity and restraint, but also of self-reflection, repentance,
penance, and spiritual renewal. On this day, Christians receive a cross of ashes – made from
burned palm branches – on their foreheads as a symbol of mortality. “Remember, man, that you
are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
