Iedereen is gelijk
Een boerenkiel is een lange, wijde jas die vroeger
door boeren, vissers en werklui gebruikt werd als
werkkleding. Tijdens carnaval werd het door álle
mensen gedragen waardoor iedereen er ongeveer
hetzelfde uitzag. Je kon geen verschil meer zien
tussen bijvoorbeeld arm en rijk. Samen, als gelijken,
feestvieren was het belangrijkste.
Boerenkiel, symbol of equality
The farmer’s smock – ‘boerenkiel’ in Dutch – served as a symbol of equality during Carnival,
traditionally a folk festival where social hierarchies were temporarily reversed. Everyone could
wear this simple garment, regardless of status or occupation. Wearing a boerenkiel during
Carnival can be seen as a tribute to the strong agricultural roots of Brabant. It emphasizes
the connection to rural life and the community. In addition, the boerenkiel symbolizes the
simplicity and inclusiveness of Carnival: it is a celebration for everyone.
